FAQ
What is a self-contained outlet?
A self-contained outlet eliminates the need for a back box by integrating a protective cap that safely encloses the wiring. Designed for convenience, it can be easily wired using standard Romex cable.
Does the self-contained outlet pass code?
Yes, all our outlets, including the new self-contained versions are designed to align with the NEC. Our unifit outlets are ETL listed (by Intertek) for both the United States and Canada. Control Number: 5029983. You can find it in the Intertek Directory of Listed Products using ‘Prado America’ in the search field. ETL is Intertek certified UL-compliant, meaning it meets the same rigorous safety standards as UL certification and is recognized in both the United States and Canada.
Does the self-contained cap work on older unifit hardwired outlets?
Unfortunately, no. The cap is designed to fixate onto the newest version of unifit hardwired, which includes this feature, whereas the older outlets do not.
What is the difference between the new unifit hardwired with self-contained cap and its predecessor?
The new Unifit Hardwired features an optional self-contained cap, specifically designed for Romex cable, eliminating the need for a back box. It installs and removes entirely from the front – no hidden steps, no extra tools required. The cap also enables daisy chaining, allowing multiple outlets to be connected in sequence for added flexibility and efficiency.
The latest version also introduces refined tamper resistance for a noticeably smoother plug-in experience, while maintaining the same high level of safety. Additionally, enhanced wire clamping ensures stronger, more reliable connections, keeping wires firmly in place for the long haul.
Prefer to install without the cap? A back box is required, and installation remains unchanged – though daisy chaining will not be possible within the box.
Is unifit hardwired approved for NYC?
Yes it is. In NYC, metallic boxes are mandatory. This means the self-contained cap must be removed, and the outlet must be installed as a hardwired unit using a metallic box and metallic conduit. Our hardwired version is approved by the NYC DOB — see approval document.
I ordered the self-contained outlet but have already installed my boxes. What should I do?
Simply remove the self-contained cap from the unifit hardwired, and it will become hardwired – it’s that easy!
What makes your unifit outlets unique?
Our unifit series stand out due to their high-quality, minimal design available in flush, surface, or small trim options. They are modular, adjusting to all panel thicknesses. They boast very easy installation from the front without any need for a removal tool. Plus, they fit in all types of materials and are proudly made in Belgium.
Are the unifit outlets UL or ETL listed?
Our unifit outlet is ETL listed (by Intertek) for both the United States and Canada. Control Number: 5029983. You can find it in the Intertek Directory of Listed Products using ‘Prado America’ in the search field.
Are your unifit outlets tamper-resistant?
Yes, all unifit outlets are tamper-resistant, identified by the “TR” marking on the module face, behind the cover plate. Fun fact: our founder’s initials are “TR,” standing for Thibault Renson. 😉
What is your delivery time?
Orders typically ship within 1-2 business days after ordering. After this period, please count 3-7 days for your order to arrive. Expedited shipping (2-4) days available at checkout. What materials can I install the unifit outlets into?
Thanks to the patented adjustable lugs system, the unifit outlet is the most versatile outlet outlet out there. That’s why our the outlets can be installed in all materials, including drywall, wood, stone, stainless steel, textile, and more.
What device box should I use to install the unifit outlets?
All standard depth nonmetallic and metallic junction boxes are suitable for installing our unifit hardwired outlets. When using the optional self-contained cap, using a back box is not required.
Is a dedicated branch circuit necessary for each unifit outlet?
Absolutely. Each device must be supplied by a unique branch circuit, which includes a separate cable assembly or conductors in a raceway, all originating from outside the box.
What are the different installation options?
We offer three installation options for the unifit series: flush, surface, or small trim. Electrically you can install hardwired (with backbox), self-contained (with the optional self-contained cap) or corded. Configure yours.
Do I need a removal tool to remove the outlet once it’s installed?
No, no removal tool is required. Simply use your plug and a screwdriver to remove our outlets. See video on this product page.
Can your unifit outlets be installed in wet rooms?
Yes, our unifit outlets can be installed in wet rooms if you use a GFI/GFCI breaker in your panel.
What are the branch circuit requirements?
For our hardwired outlets installed in a backbox (without the optional self-contained cap), each must have its own branch circuit, with wiring originating outside the device box without splicing or continuation to another device within the box. When using the self-contained cap, you don’t need to use a back box. Our corded outlets come with a 5 ft cable and a NEMA 5-15 plug and can be plugged into any other outlet.
Do you have a GFI/GFCI outlet?
While we do not offer direct GFCI outlets, a unifit outlet can achieve code compliance when used with a GFCI breaker installed remotely in the panel.
What about the different colors and finishes of the unifit outlets?
We offer cover plates in white, black, sand, or clay. Our small trim rings are available in brushed brass, brushed steel, brushed gunmetal, or brushed bronze. We provide single, double, and triple trim rings. Configure your outlet here.
How do I install 2 outlets next to each other?
The installation of two prado outlets next to each other within a back box (hardwired installation) requires a standard double gang box of 4 by 4 inches – this can be any double gang box. The required centre distance between two outlets needs to be 1-13/16” in that case. This is the same distance required for small trim ring – double. When installing self-contained or corded without a small trim ring (double or triple), you can choose a center distance greater than 1-13/16”.
