Life in the Barn

A protected farm complex from 1661, just outside Bruges. Simon de Burbure architects chose the barn over the farmhouse as the heart of the new family home. The original oak framework and thatched roof remain, and the timber structure stays visible from below.

Levels Within the Volume

Inside, several levels organize daily life while the barn keeps its full height. A freestanding staircase connects them and leaves the edges of the volume open. The kitchen becomes the center of everyday life, and rounded elements, natural stone and wood in mineral tones shape the interior. The lighting is by prado, keeping the attention on the oak structure overhead.
